A murder inquiry was launched today after a man died as a result of an assault six months ago in Dublin city centre.

Anthony Byrne (37), originally from Drimnagh, was attacked and assaulted by a group of men on Mercer Street Upper off St Stephen's Green on January 18th, 2007. He had been in a coma up until the time of his death on Monday last.

Gardai have issued an appeal to taxi drivers for information relating to an assault.

"He had just left Mercer Street flat complex and was attacked at approximately 11.50pm. He was knocked to the ground and severely assaulted. The incident lasted for several minutes," a Garda spokesman said.

A number of people were arrested and a file sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"Detectives investigating the case are appealing to anybody who may have information concerning the assault but who has not yet come forward to contact them," a Garda spokesman said. "In particular, they would like to speak to taxi drivers who may have been working in the area at the relevant time."
