A LARGE cache of ammunition and €50,000 worth of cannabis were found by gardaí in Limerick yesterday, as part of the ongoing investigation into the recent murder of Shane Geoghegan (28).
The drugs and 150 rounds of ammunition were found shortly before lunchtime yesterday in Caledonian Park close to the city's railway lines.
The discovery was made during one of four planned searches carried out in the Hyde Road area of Limerick as part of the ongoing inquiry into the murder of the rugby player.
A number of searches have been carried out across the city. Fifty detectives are involved in the inquiry into the death of Mr Geoghegan whom gardaí believe was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity.
Members of the notorious McCarthy-Dundon gang are believed to have been behind the murder and yesterday's discovery of ammunition and drugs was made close to where a number of the gang members are based.
Caledonian Park is also close to where the body of James Cronin (20) was discovered in a shallow grave last April.
Investigating gardaí confirmed yesterday that searches would continue as part of the murder inquiry, which has been helped by the recent television appeal for information by Mr Geoghegan's family on RTÉ's Crimecall programme.
In a separate investigation, a man was in custody in Limerick last night following a serious assault on a 21-year-old man last weekend.
The victim is in a serious condition in the intensive care unit of Cork University Hospital following the attack last Friday evening on Michael Street in Limerick city.
