A senior Garda officer has been appointed to review the investigation into the murders of the two women psychiatric patients in Grangegorman, Dublin. This follows the revelation that a second man who is facing other very serious charges has given a detailed statement to detectives saying he committed the murders. Some of the detail had never been made public.
Mr Dean Lyons (24) from Tallaght, Co Dublin, is currently in custody charged with murdering one of the two women.
It emerged yesterday that Assistant Commissioner Jim McHugh has been appointed to review the investigation.
Mr McHugh, who is the regional commander for the south-eastern area, has been involved in several high-level investigations and case reviews. He was previously head of the Garda Anti-Racketeering Unit.
According to Garda sources, the second man made a very detailed statement about the murders of Ms Mary Callinan (61) and Ms Sylvia Shields (59) at the house they shared with another woman outside Grangegorman psychiatric hospital. Both women were stabbed to death, suffering horrific injuries.
