A man who was extradited back from Spain to face a murder charge was today remanded in custody to appear before the Central Criminal Court next week.

Mr Colin Whelan (33) of Clonard Street, Balbriggan, North Dublin, will appear before Justice Paul Carney on Monday.

He was charged in April 2001 with the murder of his wife Mary at their Balbriggan home.

Sgt Patrick Marry of Balbriggan Garda Station arrested Mr Whelan at Dublin Airport at 9.35pm last night after he was flown back from Madrid under the new European Extradition System.

Today Bridewell District Court was told Whelan was cautioned and asked if he would like to check the warrant against the original.

A solicitor for the State asked Judge Patrick Brady to remand Mr Whelan in custody.

Solicitor for Whelan, Michael Hennessy, said he had no further applications to make.
