A jury in a murder trial was yesterday shown CCTV footage of two men carrying iron bars shortly before a 42-year-old former school teacher was beaten to death in a public park.
Mr Johnathan Tuohy (19), Edward Street, Limerick, and Mr Darren Wallace (21), Assumpta Park, Lee Estate, Limerick, are charged with the murder of Mr Noel Carmody at Arthur's Quay Park, Limerick city, on September 27th, 2003.
The two are also charged with robbing Mr Carmody on the same date. Both deny the charges.
Yesterday a jury at the Central Criminal Court, which is currently sitting in Limerick, was shown CCTV footage taken from cameras at different locations near Arthur's Quay Park on the night Mr Carmody died.
Garda Caragh Leahy told the court that photographic stills taken from a camera at "Pier One", beside Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick, showed Mr Wallace and Mr Tuohy walking in the vicinity of Arthur's Quay shortly after 4 a.m. on September 27th, 2003. She said the stills showed both men carrying iron bars, which she described as "silver coloured".
Earlier this week the jury heard evidence from Garda Leahy that when she arrived at Arthur's Quay Park shortly after 4.30 a.m. she saw Mr Tuohy strike Mr Carmody with an iron bar on the head. She said she also saw Mr Wallace crouched over Mr Carmody's body.
The court has already heard that both men were arrested shortly after gardaí arrived at the scene.
The Deputy State Pathologist, Ms Margaret Bolster, told the jury earlier that Mr Carmody died after suffering multiple blows to the head and chest.
She said the injuries were inflicted with a "blunt weapon" which she identified in court as the iron bar gardaí had found at the scene.
The trial continues today before Mr Justice Carney and a jury of six men and six women.
