The remains of an Irishman whose body was found inside a freezer in an Algarve apartment will be brought back to his native Cork today.

The body of Michael "Danzer" Ahern was discovered by police in the Orada complex in Albufeira in the Algarve on September 15th.

The 38-year-old man from Churchfield Green, Gurranabraher, in Cork city, was shot four times in the right side of his head at point-blank range.

Police in Portugal suspect Mr Ahern's murder was a settling of scores by drug gangs.

He is believed to have left Ireland eight years ago, living in Holland and Spain initially, before setting up permanent residence in Portugal last January.

Michael Ahern was born in Bweeng, near Mallow, but spent much of his adult life in Churchfield on the northside of Cork city.

He was associated with one of the city's most powerful drug gangs before setting up his own drugs operation.

He was well known to gardaí and had been sought in connection with a serious drugs matter and a vicious assault.

His remains will be brought to O'Connor Brothers funeral home at North Gate Bridge this evening. Rosary will be at 6.45pm, followed by removal to the Church of the Ascension in Gurranabraher.

Mr Ahern is survived by his sons Daniel and Stephen, mother Lily and sisters Catherine and Christine. Four Irishmen and a Briton have appeared before a magistrate in Portugal in relation to the killing.
