A Dublin man jailed for life for the murder of his wife whose body was found near a rubbish skip yesterday withdrew his appeal against conviction.

Last December, a jury at the Central Criminal Court unanimously found David Murphy (38) guilty of the murder of his wife Patricia (33) on May 27th or 28th, 1996.

Murphy had denied he strangled his wife to death at their home at Griffith Avenue and dumped her body beside a skip at The Rise, Glasnevin.

During the trial, the jury heard evidence - via video link - from Murphy's young children about the incident.

An application for leave to appeal against the conviction was listed for hearing in the Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday.

But when the case was called, Mr Brendan Grogan SC, for Murphy, said he had instructions to withdraw the appeal. He said he was satisfied his client knew what he was doing.

Murphy's decision to withdraw his appeal was based mainly on his anxiety that his children should not have to "go through the whole thing again", Mr Grogan added.
