AFTER MONTHS of anticipation, the long wait is over. As thousands of music-lovers head for the Electric Picnic, Stradbally, Co Laois, the elements may well strike the right note.
After showers today, tomorrow is set to treat fans and performers to a fine day.
Among the main acts tonight are Rodrigo Y Gabriela, who will showcase their new album 11:11 to an audience for the first time. They will headline the Electric Arena.
On the main stage, MGMT, whose debut album Oracular Spectacular, spawned two huge anthems, Kids and Time to Pretend, will be top billing followed by veteran electronica act Orbital.
The Duckworth Lewis Method, the well-received project of Neil Hannon, the singer from The Divine Comedy, and Tommy Walsh of Pugwash, play the Crawdaddy tent this evening.
Tomorrow night will feature some of the biggest acts of the festival. Along with former Beach Boy Brian Wilson and Madness, Lisa Hannigan will also grace the main stage.
Loveaction, the campaign by the gay community for full legal recognition, will be bringing its message to a marquee and is hoping the 30,000 fans will sign up to its manifesto for equal recognition for same-sex couples.
The Government’s Irish Aid programme will be showcasing the work done by Irish overseas development, which the OECD has described as a “champion in making aid more effective”.
The N80 will be the main access route from Dublin and northern counties.
