Cairo - An Egyptian court yesterday rejected a charge of slander levelled at the US President, Mr Clinton, by an Egyptian family who share the same name as the US leader's dog, Buddy, legal sources said.

The court in the town of Hahya, 100 km north of Cairo cleared Mr Clinton of the slander charge brought by Mr Abdel Hamid Buddy (40). He had complained his family had become a "laughing stock among our neighbours" owing to the name his family shared with the US first dog. In a complaint filed in May, he had demanded $5 million, plus interest, in damages. The court cleared Mr Clinton after ruling that his dog's name was "widespread in his country and has no link whatsoever to the Buddy family".
