NATO troops in Bosnia are investigating allegations of a plot to assassinate the US commander of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR) at the weekend, an alliance spokesman said today.
The investigation follows a visit by Lieutenant-General John Sylvester to the southern Bosnian town of Mostar at the weekend when a man armed with a sniper gun was arrested.
Police arrested Mr Adnan Karic (31) just before Lieutenant-General Sylvester's arrival on Saturday in possession of a 9 mm machinegun equipped with a silencer and sniperscope.
A police source said Mr Kadric, a Bosnian Muslim, was arrested during a routine traffic control ahead of Lieutenant-General Sylvester's visit.
Lieutenant-General Sylvester's visit to Mostar was devoted to meeting the town's mayor and SFOR's Spanish contingent based there.
SFOR troops have been deployed in the country since the end of the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
