A crewman of a Naval Service vessel was charged yesterday with assaulting Able Seaman Brian Gorey, whose body was found in the Liffey on Sunday morning.

Mechanic Mr Sean Lundon (19), of James Connolly Park, Tipperary Town, was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Gorey (22) aboard the LE Eithne while it was berthed at Sir John Rogerson's Quay.

At Dublin District Court yesterday, Det Sgt Oliver McEnerney said he arrested Mr Lundon at 12.35 a.m. on Tuesday and he was charged at 7.30 p.m. In reply to the charge he said "No". The Garda had no objection to bail as long as an independent surety was provided.

Judge Miriam Malone set Mr Lundon's own bail bond at £150, with an independent surety of £600. Mr Lundon must sign on each Wednesday at a Garda station.
