Former Fine Gael TD Mr Ted Nealon has been recommended by Sligo County Council for the freedom of Sligo. Fine Gael TD Mr John Perry tabled the motion that Mr Nealon be recognised for his "outstanding contribution through out his life as former minister and Dail deputy from 19811997 and in his broadcasting/ journalism career".
Seconding the motion, Mr Roddy McGuinn, the Sligo County Council chairman, said Mr Nealon had made an "enormous contribution" to the people of Sligo and was popular across party lines.
From Aclare in Sligo, Mr Nealon started his working life as a journalist, eventually moving to RTE. In 1975 he became Head of Government Information Services. He was first elected to the Sligo-Leitrim constituency in 1981. He retired from politics in 1997. Since 1973, he has been publishing Nealon's Guide to the Dail and Seanad after each general election.
