A new report has claimed that 90 per cent of people Irish people would object to Travellers being accommodated near their homes.
The research was published by Citizen Traveller campaign which is launching a series of adverts aimed at improving accommodation for travellers.
The report claims that over 1,100 Traveller families are living on roadsides throughout Ireland awaiting accommodation.It adds that negative attitudes to Travellers have not changed.
Commenting on the survey results, Mr Martin Collins, a spokesman for citizen Taveller, said: "Results of the survey reinforces the fact that nine out of 10 Irish people said they thought many people would abject to Travellers being accommodated near their homes".
The report also showed a change in the perception of Travellers as an ethnic group. Two years ago 20 per cent of those surveyed said the Traveller community were the same as settles people. This figure has dropped to 8 per cent which, according to Mr Collins, reveals a successful effort to promote the unique identity of Travellers.
