A nephew of Connemara bachelor, Mr Tom Clisham, found dead last week, was remanded in custody for a week when he appeared before Galway District Court yesterday in connection with his killing. Mr Patrick McGreene (28), with addresses at Corrib Park and St Mary's Road, both Galway city, was remanded in custody to next Monday's sitting of the District Court.
He was charged that between November 24th and December 4th, he intentionally or recklessly caused serious harm to Mr Clisham at Inverin, Co Galway, contrary to Section 4 of the NonFatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
Two other men who had been arrested in connection with the killing on Sunday afternoon were released without charge yesterday.
Det Sgt Sean O'Grady told the court Mr McGreene did not make any reply when he was arrested and charged at Salthill at 12.40 p.m. yesterday.
Mr McGreene, who is unemployed, was granted free legal aid. He arrived in court flanked by detectives, with a coat over his head. He was casually dressed in black shoes, blue slacks and a white shirt.
The defendant did not speak through the brief hearing and appeared unsteady on his feet. When he was asked by Judge John Garavan whether he had a medical card, he just shook his head and a member of his family answered for him.
Mr Sean O'Carroll, the defending solicitor, told the court that he was not objecting to the State's application that he be remanded in custody. But he asked that his client receive psychiatric treatment while in custody.
