London - The Encyclopedia Britannica, which dates back to the late 18th century, is to get a record printed edition for the new millennium, its publishers have announced. The 40-volume set, to be published in 2001, will be the largest printed in its 231-year history.
Recent Internet, CD and digital CD versions had triggered suggestions that the publishers could turn their back on print. However, spokesman Mr Paul Hoffman said the forthcoming edition underlined the company's commitment to traditional paper and ink.
A 32-book set of the encyclopedia costs £900.
