The new British ambassador in Dublin will be Mr Ivor Roberts (52), whose previous ambassadorship was in Belgrade, the Serbian capital, until last year.
The British Embassy announced Mr Roberts would take up his new appointment in Dublin next February.
He will succeed Dame Veronica Sutherland, who retires from the diplomatic service at the end of January.
Mr Roberts entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office 30 years ago and during his career has worked in many of its departments, including the Arabian, West African, Eastern European, Western European and News departments.
In 1970 to 1973, he was appointed the Third and then Second Secretary in Paris, followed by a post as Head of Chancery in Luxembourg.
In 1978 to 1980, he was appointed First Secretary in Canberra, Australia, and after a short spell on temporary duty elsewhere he returned to Canberra as the First Secretary in Economy, Commerce, and Agriculture.
In 1989 he became the Deputy Head of Mission in Madrid.
From 1994 until last year, Mr Roberts was in Belgrade, initially in the office of Charge D'Affaires; later he became British Ambassador there.
Since then he has been on secondment as Senior Associate member of St Anthony's College, Oxford.
Mr Roberts is married with two sons and a daughter.
