Britain's parliament resumed business today following the four-week break for the general election campaign which saw Labour win a landslide victory.

Labour’s Mr Michael Martin was re-elected parliamentary speaker as expected. He has been in the job since October.

In line with tradition, Mr Martin was symbolically "dragged" to the speaker's chair to applause and cheers.

Mr Martin welcomed MPs back and insisted he would "strive to be fair," adding: "It is the speaker's duty to serve the House (of Commons), not the Executive."

"I pray that I shall justify its continued confidence, and I propose to do all within my power to preserve and cherish its traditions," Mr Martin added.
