The number of people from different cultural backgrounds now seeking to work as volunteers in Ireland is increasing dramatically, a volunteer group has said.

A new brochure aimed at encouraging diversity in the voluntary sector highlighted the issue today.

It is aimed at organisations who wish to respond to the increasing numbers of people from different cultural backgrounds and countries who are seeking to volunteer in Ireland.

Stuart Garland, CEO of Volunteering Ireland, said: "This publication responds to requests from voluntary groups who are interested in promoting more cultural diversity but are unsure how to go about it and are concerned by issues such as language and cultural differences."

Mr Garland added: "Volunteering is a great way to get to know Irish culture and to integrate into society here and to make new friends. It is also a great way of getting experience and having some fun."

Diversify! Encouraging Cultural Diversity in Volunteering in Irelandis published today by Volunteering Ireland Volt Network.

The free publication will be made available to organisations that use voluntary workers. Fact sheets in 12 languages have also been published to offer advice on volunteering in Ireland.

Volunteering Ireland is a membership-based organisation that acts as a link between organisations and individuals who wish to undertake voluntary work.
