Sales of new cars rose 2.23 percent during the month of August, according to new figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) today.
Overall, 9,108 new cars were sold during the month, up from 8,909 in July.
Sales of new cars during the first six months of 2006 were up 4.94 percent year-on-year with 1,66,017 motors sold this year, compared to 158,209 in the first six months of 2005.
According to SIMI, light commercial vehicle sales were up 13.19 percent last month with 2,617 motors in this category sold during August. For the year to date, 34,290 light commercial vehicles were sold, a rise of 8.89 percent on the same period a year ago.
Heavy commercial vehicles sales declined last month by over 23 percent when compared to July.
However, sales of such vehicles for the first six months of the year were up by almost 18 percent with 4,796 vehicles sold so far in 2006.
