Galway City Council says that a new contractor will be moving into Eyre Square next Monday to finish the multimillion redevelopment scheme.
The contract has been awarded to SIAC Construction Ltd, but no estimate for costs has been released by the local authority. The last quote for the scheme was €9 million when the original contractor, Samuel Kingston Construction, quit the site on June 27th.
The local authority expects it will take six months to complete the project, which is already behind schedule.
City manager Joe McGrath said it was now time for Galway to "look forward to the successful completion" of the scheme.
SIAC Construction has undertaken several urban renewal schemes over the past three years, including redevelopment of O'Connell Street, Henry Street and Smithfield in Dublin.
The O'Connell Street project was finished early last year to meet the deadline for May 1st, 2004, EU accession day celebrations, the local authority noted yesterday.
The local authority said that the schedule and cost of works would be released in a report to the council "in the coming weeks".
Several councillors are still angry over the awarding of the original contract.
Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely has tabled a motion seeking the dismissal of the design team for the project.
