A case in which an inspector of taxes in the Limerick district office of the Revenue Commissioners is charged with conspiracy to defraud the Commissioners of a sum in excess of £3.8 million by way of a false value-added tax return last year was listed for mention in the Limerick Circuit Court yesterday.
Mr Brendan Murphy, with an address at Fieldbrook, Parteen, Co Clare, had been returned for trial from the District Court.
He had been charged at the District Court with conspiring with a Mr Brendan O'Doherty and other persons not before the court to defraud the Revenue Commissioners of £3,823,716 between January 1st and June 18th, 1997.
On a second count, he had been charged under the Forgery Act 1913 with attempting to obtain the above amount by virtue of a false VAT return purporting to be for the period March-April 1997 at the Accountant General's Office, Ennis, Co Clare, on June 18th last.
Due to the expected length of the proceedings, the defendant was not arraigned yesterday and an application was made to have a special date fixed for the trial on September 28th at the Circuit Court in Ennis.
Spaniard on drug charge for sentence
A Spanish disc-jockey who imported cannabis valued at £180,000 has been further remanded for sentence by Judge Joseph Mathews at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on April 22nd next.
Rafael Corpas (24), with an address at Joanquin Rodrigo 1, Malaga, was arrested by members of the Dublin North Central Divisional Drugs Unit in a hotel on Lower Abbey Street on August 27th, 1997.
He has been in custody since then. Evidence of the crime will be given at the sentence hearing.
