McDonald's posted a 27 per cent increase in quarterly profit today on the back of strong sales in Asia and the weak dollar.

McDonald's posted a 27 per cent increase in quarterly profit today on the back of strong sales in Asia and the weak dollar.

The chain said third-quarter profit rose to $1.07 billion from $843.3 million a year earlier.

Before a gain from the sale of its Boston Market business, earnings were 83 cents a share, matching what McDonald's pre-announced a week ago.

The company has outperformed many other restaurant chains and retailers this year, with breakfast items and new menu choices like chicken snack wraps that have done well in the United States. Extended restaurant hours helped in Asia and Australia.

Revenue rose 7 per cent to $5.90 billion. Sales excluding currency translation were up 3 per cent. The weaker dollar boosts the value of sales overseas when they are converted to dollars on the company's income statement.

McDonald's shares traded at $56.35 today in early electronic trading, down from yesterday's close of $56.79 on the New York Stock Exchange.
