Another refuse crisis in Co Galway loomed yesterday following a decision by Ballinasloe Urban Council to reintroduce a quota system for waste contractors using the Poolboy landfill near the town.

Contractors using the only landfill left in the county will have quotas reintroduced next Tuesday. In addition they are to be charged almost double for dumping an extra 15,000 tonnes of commercial waste from Galway city this year.

When the urban council tried to introduce quotas at the landfill last month, refuse contractors placed a picket on the site and refused to collect refuse throughout the city and county.
