The ancestral hometown of US president John F Kennedy yesterday announced details of plans to host Ireland’s first official celebration of the US national holiday, the Fourth of July.

New Ross in Co Wexford is planning to hold an Irish America festival to celebrate its links with the US in a bid to increase the number of tourists visiting the town.

Chairwoman of New Ross’s tourism group Bettie-Marie Burger-Smit said the town is steeped in historic links with the US through both John F Kennedy and the Dunbrody famine ship.

Among the highlights of the Irish America festival programme, which kicks off on July 3rd, is a re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party aboard the Dunbrody.
