Under the new system, introduced as part of a £3 million Environmental Plan, traffic using a number of city centre streets will be redirected from particularly congested areas (

). There will be increased bus and cycle lanes, and there will be improved facilities for pedestrians, the Dublin Corporation said.
According to Dublin Corporation, the objective of the system "is to make the area more attractive for the commercial sector, residents and the general public".
General traffic other than buses, taxis and cycles will be prevented from traveling northwards along South Great George’s Street, and must divert via Dame Street, Lord Edward Street and Winetavern Street.
Vehicles traveling northwards on Dawson Street must now turn right and travel via Nassau Street, Leinster Street South, Lincoln Place and Westland Row.
In future plans, O’Connell Street is also due to be targeted. North bound traffic will be reduced to two lanes between the junction with Henry Street and the former Carlton Cinema site. Traffic flow will also be altered on Upper and Lower Stephen Street, Longford Street and part of Mercer Street Lower.
Pedestrian routes between Henry Street and Grafton Street are also to be revamped, the Corporation said.
