Newcastle today confirmed skipper Alan Shearer has already seen a
specialist over the knee problem which forced him out of training on Saturday.
The 30-year-old former England striker limped from the training pitch in some distress after apparently aggravating the knee on which he had an operation in December.
Shearer was rushed to see a specialist amid speculation his season could be over but United were today putting on a brave face as their season threatened to lurch from one disaster to another.
"We can confirm he came out of training on Saturday with a slight knee injury," said a club spokesman. "He came off as a precautionary measure and was seen by a specialist over the weekend, and the situation is improving.
"Medical staff will continue to monitor him and they have not ruled him out of the Middlesbrough game on Saturday."
