The editor-in-chief of Podgorica daily Danwas shot and died of his wounds early on Friday, media in Montenegro reported.
Unknown gunmen shot at Dusko Jovanovic from a car as he was leaving his office around midnight, Vijesti newspaper said. He died of his wounds in hospital early on Friday.
The motive for the killing was not immediately known. Dannewspaper is close to the opposition party in Montenegro, the Socialist People's Party which was an ally of former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic, now on trial in the United Nations war crimes court.
Jovanovic was the first journalist charged with contempt of the court by the UN tribunal after authorities said he published the name of a protected witness at Milosevic's war crimes trial.
