Parliament's President Jose-Maria Gil Robles welcomed members of the Northern Ireland Assembly to Brussels saying: "Over the years, this Parliament has been constant in its support for peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, however long and difficult that process may be. The election of an Assembly marks one more step along the road to peace. Two weeks ago in Strasbourg, we recognised the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to John Hume and David Trimble and were able to show our support for our colleague John Hume. Today, it gives me great pleasure to be able to offer our congratulations to David Trimble. As members of the new Assembly, you are on the threshold of a great adventure. We wish you a fruitful visit to Brussels and every success in the months and years ahead."
