People in Northern Ireland are more prepared to inform on drug dealers and racketeers, new research suggests.
British government research found that 52 percent of those questioned declared they would inform the authorities, on criminals suspected of amassing illegal fortunes, compared with 48 per cent of those asked a year earlier.
Stormont Security Minister, Ms Jane Kennedy said: "It is encouraging that over half of those surveyed said they would report someone if they knew they were associated with organised crime."
More than 1,200 people were surveyed. Some 92 per cent of people questioned said the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF), which involves police, customs and the inland revenue, was a good idea.
Many believed there was a problem with drug-dealing, prostitution and fuel-smuggling and other rackets. Some 79 per cent thought loyalist and republican terrorist organisations carried out most of the trade.
Ms Kennedy, who chairs the OCTF, said: "Organised crime is a serious problem in Northern Ireland and is hindering the transition to a normal, responsible civic society." - (PA)
