A Co Tyrone man who let thousands of tonnes of household waste from the Republic be dumped on his land was today convicted of breaching waste legislation.
Toxic pollutants escaped from the rubbish after John McKenna permitted his site at Corleaghan Road, Clogher to be used as a dump. He was convicted by a jury at Omagh Crown Court on three charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land Order.
Environment and Heritage Service officers visited the site in January 2004 and discovered over 11,000 tonnes of biodegradable refuse. The prosecution are to apply for a criminal confiscation of McKenna's assets.
The defendant lives at Old Monaghan Road, Clogher. He pleaded not-guilty but was convicted after a trial.
