Policing in Northern Ireland today received a £10 million sterling boost bringing the total budget for the force to £645 million.

Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid said: "I am determined that the police should have the resources they need to do the job."

Dr Reid has held talks with RUC Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan and the Police Authority to identify what additional funds are needed.

Dr Reid said: "I have decided immediately to provide an additional £10m for policing this year, to cope with the short-term pressure.

A further £102 million has already been allocated to implement the Patten recommendations on police reform.

The increased funding was welcomed by the Chief Constable, who described it as a reflection of the Government's commitment to proper police resourcing.
