Northern Ireland's police ombudsman was today investigating the sudden death of a man while police were in his house in Coleraine, Co Derry.
A statement from Nuala O'Loan's office said the man collapsed in a house in The Heights area of the town at around 11am.
Police applied first aid but he died at the scene. Police officers had been conducting inquiries in the house.
"The police ombudsman's office is routinely notified in circumstances when a person dies who has been in contact with police," they said.
"A police ombudsman team of investigators is now at the scene."
The ombudsman's office has also appointed a family liaison officer to deal with the man's relatives.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the man collapsed at the door of his home as their officers carried out routine inquiries in the area.
"Police were making routine inquiries at the home of an individual in Coleraine this morning," a statement said. "When police called at the door the man collapsed. Police called an ambulance and the man was taken to hospital where he later died.
"In the interests of transparency the police service has contacted the Offices of the Police Ombudsman."
