A Co Down sailor has been killed while taking part in a regatta off North Wales, it was revealed today.

The 49-year-old from Banbridge was on a 4.6 metre Laser 4000 dinghy which is thought to have capsized.

He was taking part in the Laser 4000 Nationals at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club near Abersoch, when tragedy struck.

A woman who was also on the dinghy survived the incident yesterday afternoon and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The victim of the tragedy will not be named until after all his next of kin have been informed.

There were 38 dinghies, each crewed by two people, taking part in the competition which has been running since last Saturday.

Sailing club general manager Andrew Robertson said: "It is with much regret that the Laser 4000 Class Association and South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club must announce the tragic death of a sailor competing in the Laser 4000 Nationals.

"The Class Association and the club extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the competitor."

North Wales Police said the man died at the scene and they and the Coastguard would be holding a joint investigation.
