The North's First Minister, Mr David Trimble, has urged the Northern Secretary, Dr John Reid, to meet Portadown Orangemen to try to resolve the Drumcree parade dispute.

Mr Trimble, whose Upper Bann constituency includes Drumcree and the Garvaghy Road, was speaking following a meeting with the Portadown Orangemen at Stormont yesterday.

The First Minister said the Parades Commission, set up by the British government to deal with controversial marches, had failed to deliver.

Mr Trimble said he thought a parade by the Orangemen along the Garvaghy Road should form part of the solution to the Drumcree problem.

"I think it would be part of it, obviously just a part because there are other concerns in the community as a whole," he said.

"I think we have got to stress the community aspect of this."

Mr Trimble said it was vital that the trouble over marching in the North in recent years be avoided this summer.

During their meeting with Mr Trimble, the Portadown Orangemen handed over a letter asking the Assembly to put pressure on the British government to restore their human rights by allowing them to complete the Drumcree parade.
