Petrol tankers are to be banned from using the Dublin Port Tunnel at night from next week under a new agreement between Dublin City Council and Dublin Fire Brigade staff.
Staff at the fire service are being balloted this week by their unions, Siptu and Impact, on the agreement which was reached late last Friday following negotiations between the council and the unions at the Labour Relations Commission.
The agreement will see two additional staff allocated to the tunnel response vehicles with petrol tankers escorted through the tunnel between 5am and 9pm daily. A safety audit of the tunnel will be conducted over the next three months after which the agreement will be reviewed.
