At least nine commuters were killed and 60 injured when a bomb ripped through a women's carriage on a packed suburban train in one of Bombay's busiest rail stations today.
The explosion at Mulund station is the deadliest of a series of blasts in India's financial hub in recent months and came just hours after a bomb on a bus killed four people in Indian Kashmir.
Police said they suspected the Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) could be behind the attack.
Witnesses said the bomb exploded as the train was pulling into Mulund station, triggering panic on platforms crowded with office workers leaving Bombay for their suburban homes.
"The blast was ear-splitting and we saw bits and pieces of the carriage flying in all directions," one witness said.
The impact was so powerful it blew a gaping hole in the metal structure and left seats a mess of twisted metal.
