Nine Indian policemen were killed and 10 wounded when Muslim guerrillas stormed a police camp in the Kashmir region, police said today.
At least nine policemen were killed when militants stormed a police camp near Handwara late last night. The body of a militant was also found.
Handwara is in Kupwara district 87 kilometres northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Separatist violence in the state has escalated in recent months after a peace-seeking summit in July between India and Pakistan ended in deadlock. Nearly a dozen guerrilla groups have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir since late 1989.
Police and hospitals say more than 30,000 people have been killed in more than 11 years of violence. The separatists say the toll is closer to 80,000.
