The Continuity IRA has indicated it will not be declaring a ceasefire.
In a telephone call to The Irish Times yesterday, a member of the group claimed responsibility for an alleged attack on the security forces in Armagh city at the weekend.
The caller, who used a recognised code-word, said the CIRA had fired on an RUC Land-Rover on the Moy Road shortly before midnight on Friday. When asked if the group was considering a ceasefire, he said: "The struggle goes on." The CIRA and the "Real IRA" are the only republican paramilitary groups which have not called ceasefires. The "Real IRA" declared a suspension of its campaign after the Omagh bomb but has so far not announced a complete cessation.
The CIRA caller said there would be further attacks on "British crown forces". The RUC press office said it had no record of any attacks and said no RUC Land-Rovers had been in the area at that time.
This is not the first time the paramilitary group has claimed attacks which the RUC has denied have taken place. In Derry during the summer it claimed it attacked a British army base but the police said they had no reports of an incident.
