THE DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions has decided not to prosecute over the death of seven-week-old Shkira Farrell-Scanlon who died in hospital after falling out of her Moses basket.

The infant suffered injuries in the fall and died three days later in Sligo General Hospital in August last year.

She never recovered consciousness, although she was put on a life-support machine after she was taken to hospital by her parents Rosanna Farrell and Michael Scanlon. A number of people were arrested by gardaí investigating the death and a file was sent to the DPP.

Gardaí in the case said the DPP issued instructions within the last two weeks that nobody was to be prosecuted.

Shkira was born four weeks premature when her mother suddenly went into labour and was taken to hospital.

The infant weighed only 1.8kg (4 lbs) and was placed in an incubator for several weeks before doctors said she was well enough to be taken home nearly two weeks before her death.

Her parents discovered the basket upside down and the child on the floor the night she died.
