My mini-marathon - Oorla Rafter: Arriving on a beautiful sunny day at the start line in Fitzwilliam Street (staggered to cater for the various categories - blind category, disabled category, runners, joggers and walkers) we were met by the noise of excitement.

Over 40,000 women smiling, laughing and doing what women do best - talking.

The noise was deafening but the atmosphere was just fantastic.

Women of all descriptions - old, young, small, tall, thin and curvy - all eager to start.

All there for the pure fun and enjoyment. Did I say enjoyment - my body did not agree last night.

Music was played on loudspeakers, and we were told to take our places.

The event was colourful, and there were even men dressed in fancy dress, all of us taking part for charity.

We slowly shuffled down on to Mount Street turning towards Ballsbridge.

Up at Nutley Lane we waved towards RTÉ just in case they were looking for young red-faced women for a make-over.

We were hosed by firemen in Donnybrook - and then the home straight, the balloon arch at the finish line in Stephen's Green.

Bystanders cheered and waved throughout the whole 10 kilometres.

Some of the competitors were probably home hours before. But it's the beginning - you never know, next year we might do the full marathon.
