Nokia today reported that 46 million batteries used in its phones could overheat.
The world's largest mobile phone manufacturer said it would replace the faulty batteries at no cost to customers.
The batteries, branded "BL-5C", are Nokia's most commonly used battery, and more 300 million of them have been made by several different suppliers for the company.
The faulty batteries were manufactured by Matsushita Electric Industrial between December 2005 and November 2006.

The company said that there had been some 100 cases of overheating worldwide but no serious casualties.
Shares in Nokia fell by 1.2 per cent at the news today.
