THERE ARE just two ways to win a nomination to run in a presidential election: a candidate must have either the support of four local authorities or 20 Oireachtas members. Each city or county council may only support one candidate. A TD or Senator may only back one candidate.
Nominations for the presidential election which takes place on October 27th close on September 27th.
Should an Oireachtas member seek to support a second candidate, the presidential election returning officer is obliged under the electoral legislation to disallow the second and any further nominations, according to the Department of the Environment.
