North car crime rate cut by 50%

Car crime in Northern Ireland has been cut by more than 50 per cent in the last five years, it was announced today.

At the same time domestic burglaries have been reduced by almost 25 per cent.

Government targets five years ago for the reduction of both types of crime have been exceeded.

Announcing the success, Criminal Justice Minister Maria Eagle said the British government was determined to build of the success.

Car crime - thefts of vehicles or from vehicles - was reduced over the five years to April 2007 by 53 per cent, against a target of 10 per cent.

Domestic burglaries were reduced by 24.6 per cent, compared to a target of 15 per cent.
