A plan for tackling Northern Ireland's housing crisis will today be unveiled by Stormont minister Margaret Ritchie.

The nationalist SDLP Social Development Minister will brief Assembly members on her plans to build more social homes and help more people get on the property ladder through co-ownership schemes.

On taking office last May, Ms Ritchie said tackling homelessness was a key priority for her and she also wanted to help more people afford their homes.

She has hinted her plans could include asking developers to allocate either a certain percentage of the site they seeking planning permission for to social and affordable homes, or provide the equivalent cost to the Government.

"That would provide money through developer contributions and more land sales to build more houses throughout the spectrum," she said.

"That would help those in need, those on the waiting list or who are homeless and those unable to get on the property ladder."

Ms Ritchie secured an additional £200 million in Stormont Finance Minister Peter Robinson's budget for social and affordable housing.
