Tribal militants in northeastern India killed 11 people in an ambush today.

Police said the rebels fired at two vehicles carrying railway employees to a site where new tracks were being laid in Assam state's North Cachar Hills district, about 240 kilometres south of the state's main city of Guwahati.

Those killed were seven railway police officers, three drivers and a railway official.

Police said they suspected the Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) group was behind the attack, and that the DHD had been demanding extortion money from the railways for quite some time.
