At St Patrick's Catholic Cathedral in Belfast the Bishop of Down and Connor, Dr Patrick Walsh, held a special mass for the victims.

Afterwards he expressed his horror at Tuesday's attacks and said: "The pall of darkness which shrouded New York and Washington has covered the entire civilised world."

An inter-denominational service was held in Derry's St Columb's Cathedral this afternoon.

At the same time memorial services were held at the Ulster American Memorial in Larne, Co Antrim and in the council offices at Lisburn, Co Antrim.

An Inter-church service, attended by Ulster Secretary Dr John Reid was held yesterday in Belfast's St Anne's Church of Ireland Cathedral.

The first flight from Northern Ireland to New York since the attacks took off from Belfast this afternoon when Aer Lingus restarted the route.
