Northern Ireland reports rise in unemployment

Unemployment in Northern Ireland rose by almost one per cent on the last quarter, according to statistics released today.

The latest jobless figures released today for July to September reveal that there are around 49,000 people currently out of work - 6.3 per cent of the totalworkforce.

However hundreds of redundancies already announced are due to filter through to the next quarterly figures. These include almost 400 in Shorts Brothers andhundreds more from technology companies in East Antrim.

Commenting on the figures, economy minister Mr Ian Pearson warned that Northern Ireland was not immune to falling demand caused by the tightening in world markets.
