Adrienne McIvor, an Australian-born 400m hurdler chosen to compete for Northern Ireland, has been expelled from the Commonwealth Games after being ruled ineligible to represent her adopted country.

McIvor, 31, was born and bred in Brisbane and has never lived in Northern Ireland, where her mother was born.

Although she represented Ireland at the 2000 Olympics under International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) rules, Commonwealth Games guidelines state that athletes must have lived in the country they are representing for at least a year prior to the Games.

"The girl has been withdrawn from the team, unfortunately," said Northern Ireland chef de mission Billy Stewart. "It was a simple error made by the Northern Ireland athletics federation."
