Northern Secretary condemns attack on RUC

The Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid has condemned the attack on the RUC last night that seriously injured one officer.

Dr Reid said those behind the attack had "nothing to offer society".

The RUC fired a plastic bullet during disturbances on the nationalist Kilwilkie housing estate in Lurgan. A gang of youths threw bombs and stones at RUC officers who were guarding a British army bomb disposal team examining a suspect device on a nearby railway line.

Seven other officers were hurt in the attack. The device was later declared to be safe.
