London - The police chief in charge of security at Britain's nuclear installations has resigned, complaining he does not have enough staff, a spokeswoman for the Department of Trade and Industry said yesterday.

The resignation of Mr Anthony Pointer, chief constable for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), follows Britain's controversial decision to accept 4 kg of nuclear waste from the former Soviet republic of Georgia. The material has been stored at the Dounreay plant in Scotland.

The Sunday Times said Mr Pointer had privately warned that British nuclear plants, including Dounreay, were open to attacks by terrorists and environmental activists because of low staffing levels.
